So my Barre instructor talked last night about Barre classes she took while she was away last week. Apparently she picked up some semi heavy weights, and the instructor of that class told her to get smaller weights, and said “Do you want to look like a man”. And my instructor agreed with her. That makes me angry. Barre classes use weights, and any class that uses weights and strength training should be required to have some sort of training in this area. I mean I don’t have training and even I know that this statement is pure ignorance. Weights don’t make you bulky or “manly”, if done correctly. From my understanding, from many very reliable sources, cardio after weights can make you burn more calories. Also, when doing reps with weights, less than 12 reps is for building muscle, more than 12 is for burning fat.
I really like my Barre class, and the instructor, but she has a tendency to talk about things she clearly doesn’t know. When you are in front of a group of people who trust you, you better damn well know exactly what you are talking about. It bothers me when I see people giving bad advice, and passing it off as fact. At least preface it with “This is just my opinion” or “I am not sure, but I have heard”. I see it here on tumblr a lot too. Blogs answering peoples questions as if they have the facts, when they clearly don’t. It is bothersome. I know a lot about nutrition and some about exercise, from trial and error, research, and from having a Weight Watchers leader as a mom, but I won’t pass off information I say as fact, and will not mislead people. There are some things I know as fact, others I have a pretty good understanding of, but I will always differentiate between them, and I am open to discussion if you disagree with anything I say. I always like to hear another side of something, and will admit if I am proven wrong.
Ok that’s my rant. I just got frustrated.
